Belle de Niassa bears witness to the power of olfactory memory through the story of a quest in northern Mozambique, in an astoundingly beautiful nature, to find and restore the bewitching scent of mahogany blossom.
In the heart of the plains of Niassa, the bush extends endlessly over the arid land. As far as the eye can see, areas of open savannah alternate with shrubby vegetation. The dry season is at its peak. In the afternoon light, the sun enlivens the grasses and foliage of the shrubs with golden reflections. Suddenly, an unexpected smell fuses. The dry air is charged with an opulent scent of white flowers, powerful, addictive, captivating. This perfume is that of the mahogany flower.
DID YOU KNOW ?
Unpredictable, the flowering of the mahogany flower announces the arrival of the rains. Invisible at first glance, ephemeral, it reserves its fragrance for a privileged few who are lucky enough to surprise it between October and November, at the very moment when it blossoms. The branches of the mahogany are then covered with a multitude of small majestic flowers, possessing a single petal of a dazzling pink.
